To change a child’s diet, here are some principles to consider: 1. They need to see mommy and daddy eating healthy foods. Try to verbalize at meal time why you choose to eat healthier foods and a wide variety of foods. 2. Don’t try to change everything at once. The ultimate goal is to eliminate all dairy and white sugar and from the diet. At this point I would emphasize balance. Set a goal that the child needs to eat 2 vegetables and 1 fruit before they get their next serving of milk or empty carbs. He doesn’t get his “non-nutritive foods” until he’s met his requirements of healthy foods. a. Reminder: a serving for a child is about the size of his hand. J Start small…he may not eat his whole serving in the beginning and he’ll be fighting every step of the way (maybe) but even if he attempts to eat a few bites of the vegetable, then allow him a small portion of whatever “white” food he’s requesting (not the size of his normal portion). b. Gradually reduce the amount of milk he’s allowed to have until he’s getting zero and be sure to incorporate other proteins into his diet. He needs some form of protein with every meal.
3. Keep in mind there will be certain foods that he just doesn’t like.
4. Keep reinforcing why we need to eat fruits/veggies, get enough protein, etc. You want food to be about refueling and not simply about pleasure. We have way too many “emotional eaters” in this country.
5. Be sure he’s drinking only water…no fruit juice.
Supplementation for infections in the 2-4 year old (30-60lbs): 1. Start off with a Multiple Vitamin and Mineral supplement (if they’re not already taking it): I like Childife or LifeSource brands…Nature’s Plus is decent. Avoid the gummies; be sure its an MVM…not just MV; watch the colors, sweeteners and preservatives used. 2. Lauricidin ½ scoop 2x per day for 2 days then reduce to ½ scoop per day for 2 weeks…mix with applesauce or mashed avocado or other soft foods. This is a great product to teach kids how to swallow pills. 3. Vitamin C 250-500mg/day 4. Vitamin D 200-400IU/day (get them out in the sun with no sunscreen for 10-20 minutes…be sure skin is exposed) 5. Kids probiotic: find a kids probiotic at the health food store and take per package instructions. I like Raw Probiotics - Kids Directions from GARDEN OF LIFE and Ezymatic Therapy Pearl Kids 6. Other considerations: iodine deficiency and anemia...gotta test to be sure. 7. In infants, this is all made so much easier if the child is being breastfed. I would encourage women out there who are considering having children or are currently pregnant to give the idea of breastfeeding a serious consideration. 8.
